Kyra Maya Phillips
What I’m Currently Doing Based in Sydney, Australia, I am currently re-training as a high school English and Modern History teacher. I spend a lot of my time reading and writing about what I read, usually literary fiction, critical theory, philosophy, and anti racist literature. I write Snail Mail, a slow monthly newsletter which only shares long-lasting, in-depth content; and Marginalia, a monthly(ish) newsletter that focuses solely on sharing great book recommendations.
Previously A few years ago, I wrote a book called The Misfit Economy (out now with Simon & Schuster), a chronicle of creativity from informal and dark markets around the globe. I have written for and appeared in publications around the world, including BBC, NPR, The Economist, The Financial Times, TIME, Newsweek, Harvard Business Review, and others. Since 2017, I have focused my public speaking efforts on interviewing other authors, conducting interviews with some of Australia’s most celebrated writers and gaining recognition as a deeply prepared, perceptive and generous interviewer. In the past, I worked as a journalist at The Guardian, as a consultant at SustainAbility, and as a project manager at Business in the Community.
